Two Dead from Rare Brain Disease in Australia's Alice Springs

(MENAFN) Two fatalities linked to Murray Valley encephalitis have been recorded in Alice Springs within a span of two months, triggering urgent health alerts across Australia's Northern Territory, local media reported on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Northern Territory Department of Health confirmed both deaths took place in April and May, declining to disclose further information about the victims, per a media report.

The alerts intensified after the virus was identified in mosquito populations in Darwin earlier this month, prompting officials to issue a formal public health advisory.

Murray Valley encephalitis — though rare — is a potentially deadly illness spread exclusively through bites from virus-carrying mosquitoes, with no known cure.

Health authorities warn that the window of highest risk runs from February through June, with infections typically peaking between March and May.

Those infected may experience a range of serious symptoms, among them severe headaches, high fever, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, extreme drowsiness, mental confusion, and seizures.

Residents and tourists throughout the territory are being strongly urged to take immediate protective measures: applying insect repellents that contain DEET or picaridin, covering exposed skin with appropriate clothing, securing camping tents against mosquito entry, and steering clear of mosquito-heavy environments — especially after dark.
