Indonesia Sends Peacekeepers to Lebanon Amid Ongoing Strikes

(MENAFN) Indonesia announced on Monday that it will deploy more than 700 peacekeepers to southern Lebanon, even as attacks and killings in the region continue amid ongoing Israeli military activity.

The planned deployment involves 742 soldiers who will replace Indonesian personnel currently serving in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, according to Presidential Chief of Staff Dudung Abdurachman, as reported by a state-run news agency.

"I see that the troops are ready. Of course, this is a UN mission, but more importantly it is a mission for the Indonesian nation," Dudung said.

He stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of the deployed troops, maintaining Indonesia’s international reputation, and carrying out the mission effectively.

According to reports, six United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon personnel have been killed during the conflict, including four Indonesian peacekeepers.

Despite a ceasefire announced on April 17 and later extended to May 17, Israeli forces have reportedly continued carrying out daily strikes in Lebanon.

Since March 2, ongoing Israeli attacks have resulted in thousands of casualties, with at least 2,869 people killed and 8,730 wounded, while more than 1.6 million people have been displaced—around one-fifth of the population, according to the latest available figures.
