US, China Hold Last-Minute Trade Talks in Seoul Ahead of Trump–Xi Summit

(MENAFN) Closed-door negotiations between US and Chinese officials took place in Seoul on Wednesday as both sides worked to align priorities ahead of the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

According to reports, the talks were led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, and were held at a VIP lounge in Incheon International Airport under strict security arrangements.

The discussions were aimed at coordinating the agenda for the high-level meeting scheduled for Thursday, with both sides focusing on trade-related issues and broader economic concerns expected to dominate the summit.

Bessent arrived in South Korea after a stop in Japan and is also expected to meet South Korean President Lee Jae Myung during his regional trip, alongside further consultations with Chinese officials.

He is set to travel onward to Beijing to join the US presidential delegation for the Trump–Xi summit.

During his time in Japan, Bessent met with senior government officials, including Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, to discuss bilateral economic relations and broader financial cooperation between the two countries.
