Hungary's PM Says He Will Not Assume Seat in New Parliament

(MENAFN) Hungary’s outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced that he will not assume his seat in the newly formed parliament following the electoral setback suffered by his Fidesz party. Instead, he said his attention will be directed toward reorganizing what he described as the country’s “patriotic movement.”

In a video message released on Saturday, Orban explained that the parliamentary mandate he secured as the head of the Fidesz-KDNP list “is in fact the parliamentary mandate of Fidesz,” and therefore he has chosen to “give it back.”

“I am now needed not in parliament, but in the reorganization of the patriotic movement,” he stated.

The announcement comes shortly after Fidesz, which had long dominated Hungarian politics, suffered a significant defeat to Peter Magyar’s Tisza party. According to reports, Tisza secured 141 out of 199 seats in the April 12 parliamentary election, marking a major political shift.

Orban also indicated that the Fidesz parliamentary group will undergo a “radically transformed” structure, with Gergely Gulyas set to lead the faction once it is established on Monday. He added that the party will convene a national assembly in the coming week and advance its “renewal congress” to June.

Although stepping away from parliamentary duties, Orban made clear that he does not intend to withdraw from party leadership. He said the leadership has proposed that he remain president of Fidesz and that he is prepared to continue if the upcoming congress confirms its support.

He maintained a defiant tone, stating that “this camp has remained Hungary’s most united and cohesive political community.”
