Taiwan Receives Final Shipment of US Tanks

(MENAFN) Taiwan has received the final shipment of its fleet of M1A2T Abrams tanks from the United States, completing an order of 108 units valued at approximately $1.28 billion, according to reports.

The latest batch, consisting of 28 tanks, arrived late Sunday at Taipei Port aboard a cargo vessel.

On Monday, the tanks were transported to the Taiwanese army’s Armored Training Command in Hukou Township, located in Hsinchu County in northwestern Taiwan, according to Focus Taiwan.

The procurement package was funded through an estimated $1.28 billion allocation, with deliveries from the US beginning in December 2024 and a second batch arriving in July.

Taiwan’s armed forces currently operate roughly 1,000 tanks, and the newly delivered Abrams units are expected to be assigned to the Army’s Sixth Corps. They are scheduled to reach full operational readiness by the end of the year.

The delivery comes at a time when Taiwan’s legislature is still debating a large-scale defense spending proposal aimed at acquiring more than $39 billion in weapons over the next decade.

The United States remains Taiwan’s primary arms supplier, despite Beijing’s claim that the island is part of its territory.

However, opposition lawmakers have so far prevented the bill from advancing.

Separately, Kuomintang Chair Cheng Li-wun said on Monday that she plans to visit the United States for a 10-day trip in June. Her upcoming visit follows a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing earlier this month.
