House Panel Subpoenas Attorney General Over Epstein Investigation Review

(MENAFN) The US House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has formally compelled Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify in a deposition regarding the Justice Department’s approach to the inquiry involving the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as detailed in a letter made public on Tuesday.

Committee Chairman James Comer stated that the panel is examining “the possible mismanagement of the federal government’s investigation of Mr. Jeffrey Epstein and (his associate) Ms. Ghislaine Maxwell,” alongside “the circumstances and subsequent investigations of Mr. Epstein’s death” and adherence to the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The review reflects broader concerns about how the case was handled at multiple levels.

In correspondence dated March 17, Comer explained that lawmakers are scrutinizing the events surrounding Epstein’s death, the wider functioning of sex-trafficking networks, and whether federal officials managed associated evidence and disclosures appropriately throughout the process.

Additionally, the committee intends to evaluate the Justice Department’s involvement in gathering, analyzing, and releasing documents connected to Epstein and his network, with possible legislative changes being weighed as part of the inquiry.

According to the letter, Bondi has been requested to attend a deposition scheduled for April 14.

Epstein was discovered deceased in his jail cell in New York City in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking allegations. Earlier, in 2008, he admitted guilt in a Florida court to procuring a minor for prostitution; however, critics have described the relatively lenient outcome as a “sweetheart deal.”
