India Detains Foreign Nationals Over Suspected Myanmar Insurgent Links
The group was apprehended for questioning by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), with a Delhi court ordering that they remain in detention until March 27. Three Ukrainians were arrested in the capital city, while the remaining three, along with the U.S. citizen, were taken into custody in Lucknow and Kolkata, respectively.
Authorities allege that the individuals entered the northeastern state of Mizoram before crossing into Myanmar, where they reportedly engaged with ethnic insurgent groups connected to violent activities in India. Investigators also claim the group imported a substantial shipment of drones from Europe.
In 2024, the federal government outlined plans to implement a national counter-terrorism policy aimed at strengthening the country’s security framework. Following a terror attack in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in April last year, the NIA coordinated with anti-terrorism units across states to review measures designed to prevent similar incidents.
A policy document from the Home Ministry noted that terrorist networks operating from abroad often exploit the knowledge, logistics, and infrastructure provided by local groups, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance and coordinated action.
