Iran’s FM Slams US for Relying on Others to Protect Strait of Hormuz
Araghchi said in a post on the social media platform X that the US security apparatus in the region “proven to be full of holes and inviting rather than deterring trouble.” He claimed that Washington is “begging others, even China, to help it make Hormuz safe,” referring to the crucial shipping lane through which a significant portion of global oil flows.
The Iranian foreign minister called on neighboring states to expel what he described as “foreign aggressors,” emphasizing that their true concern is Israel. In a televised interview, he added that the waterway “is open” to ships not belonging to the US, Israel, or their allies, noting that “Others are free to pass.”
Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz since early March, following joint military strikes by Israel and the United States on Feb. 28. Reports indicate that these attacks resulted in at least 1,300 deaths in Iran, including the country’s then-supreme leader Ali Khamenei. The closure of the strait has disrupted shipping, driving up global oil and fertilizer prices and raising concerns about energy supplies.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump said that countries dependent on oil transported through the strait must take responsibility for securing it, adding that the US would assist and suggesting that naval escorts for tankers could begin “soon.”
In retaliation, Tehran has launched a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets. The exchanges have caused casualties, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted regional trade and global markets, according to reports.
