Russia Prioritizes Strategic Ties with India
The two diplomats convened in the Russian capital on Monday, ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s planned trip to New Delhi for a bilateral summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Lavrov stated, “We are building transport and logistics chains that are not subject to external illegal influence. We are enhancing the items that constitute our mutual trade, and we build up the mechanisms for making sure that we are not hindered by illegitimate impact imposed by third parties.”
His comments highlight Russia’s intention to strengthen trade and logistical frameworks resilient to external pressures.
Jaishankar highlighted that multiple bilateral agreements, initiatives, and projects are under consideration across various sectors, which will “certainly add more substance and texture” to the ongoing partnership between Moscow and New Delhi.
He emphasized that India-Russia relations have historically been “a factor of stability in international relations,” and their expansion serves “not only in our mutual interest but also in that of the world.”
Putin’s upcoming visit comes as Western nations increase scrutiny of Moscow’s close relations with New Delhi.
The US has implemented a 50% tariff on India, including a 25% punitive levy on Russian oil imports, alleging that India is “funding” the Ukraine conflict through its oil purchases.
India has rejected these Western criticisms, asserting that its energy strategy is guided by “national interest.”
At the same time, New Delhi continues to broaden trade relations with the US, including a recently announced one-year deal to buy liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is projected to represent nearly 10% of its annual requirements.
