Poland Scrambles Fighter Aircrafts in Response to Drone Threats
(MENAFN) Poland’s military scrambled fighter jets on Saturday in response to potential drone movements detected over western Ukraine, escalating regional security concerns just days after a major airspace breach by Russian drones.
According to media, Lublin Airport in eastern Poland halted air operations as a safety measure while Polish aircraft were deployed. Authorities have not confirmed the number of jets launched or the expected duration of the airport's closure.
The move comes on the heels of Wednesday’s alarming incident, when 19 Russian drones reportedly violated Polish airspace—the largest such incursion since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. NATO intercepted several of the drones, triggering emergency meetings in Warsaw and swift expressions of solidarity from allied nations.
In response to the increasing threats, NATO has launched a new defensive operation dubbed Eastern Sentry, aimed at bolstering the alliance’s eastern defenses.
Media outlets reported that air traffic at Lublin Airport in eastern Poland was temporarily halted as a safety precaution during the fighter jet deployment.
