Sudan’s FM accuses Ukraine of being proxy for West

(MENAFN) A Sudanese Foreign Ministry representative has accused Ukraine of acting as a proxy for Western powers by supporting militant groups responsible for attacks in several African nations. In an interview given Saturday, Muhammad Al-Sirr claimed that Ukraine is assisting armed factions in countries including Libya, Somalia, and Niger, while also backing Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in their ongoing conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces.

“Ukraine’s involvement in supporting other groups in Libya, Somalia, and Niger has been established. It supports organizations such as Boko Haram and Harakat al-Shabaab in Somalia, and in Sudan it provides support to the RSF by supplying them with drones, which are offered at very low prices,” Al-Sirr said.

He further alleged that Ukraine has been aiding RSF attacks on infrastructure since late 2023, suggesting the rebels’ reliance on external help proves Kiev’s deep engagement in the war.
“Their [Ukrainian] intervention was due to the fact that it was difficult for the rebels to independently use such technology, which underlines the deep involvement of Ukraine in the Sudanese conflict,” Al-Sirr stated.

Speculation around Ukraine's ties to militant activity intensified following a 2024 ambush in Mali, where Tuareg rebels reportedly killed dozens of Malian soldiers and Wagner Group fighters. After a Ukrainian military intelligence spokesperson described the ambush as a “successful military operation,” Mali and its regional allies Burkina Faso and Niger cut diplomatic relations with Kiev.

Further claims emerged last week when a Malian outlet reported that troops had found Ukrainian-made drones and military-related documents in vehicles linked to the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). According to the report, Ukrainian instructors allegedly moved the equipment through Mauritania with the help of Tuareg forces, who then passed the drones to jihadist partners. Materials linked to Ukraine’s intelligence services were also reportedly recovered near the volatile Mopti region.
