Russia FM, UN Envoy of Sudan discuss resolving Sudan’s conflict

(MENAFN) Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin held talks with Ramtane Lamamra, the UN secretary-general’s personal envoy for Sudan, to explore possible paths toward resolving Sudan’s ongoing conflict, according to an official announcement from the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday.

Their meeting focused on the escalating violence that has gripped Sudan since April 2023, where clashes between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have continued unabated. The struggle for dominance between the two factions has disrupted the country’s already fragile transition to civilian governance.

“The need for coordinated efforts by the international community aimed at achieving a ceasefire and resuming an inclusive inter-Sudanese dialogue involving all influential political forces and ethno-confessional groups in the country was emphasized,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

They also stressed the severe humanitarian impact of the war, which has displaced millions.
“The inadmissibility of destructive external interference in the Sudanese crisis has been reaffirmed,” the statement read.

According to reports referencing the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over 4 million people have fled since the fighting began. UNHCR spokesperson Eugene Byun described the situation as a “tragic milestone,” cautioning that ongoing hostilities may trigger further displacement and instability across the region and beyond.
