Global Displacement Reaches Record High
The organization described the scale of the crisis as “untenably high,” reflecting the growing strain on humanitarian systems.
Based on the findings of the UNHCR’s Global Trends Report, the number of displaced people increased from 120 million the previous year, continuing a ten-year pattern of rising numbers.
This escalation is fueled by persistent conflicts in regions such as Sudan, Myanmar, and Ukraine.
"The number of people displaced by war, violence and persecution worldwide is untenably high, particularly as humanitarian funding evaporates," the agency emphasized, highlighting the strain on aid resources.
"The only bright spot being a pickup in returns, notably to Syria," indicating some hopeful signs amidst the crisis.
Currently, Sudan is experiencing the most severe displacement emergency on the planet, with 14.3 million people uprooted. This figure exceeds those displaced in Syria, which stands at 13.5 million, followed by Afghanistan at 10.3 million and Ukraine with 8.8 million, according to the report.
"We are living in a time of intense volatility ... marked by acute human suffering. We must redouble our efforts to search for peace and find long-lasting solutions,” said Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, stressing the urgent need for global peacebuilding and resolution strategies.
In contrast to common beliefs, most people seeking refuge—67 percent—stay in nearby countries, and 60 percent do not cross national boundaries.
Furthermore, 73 percent of the global refugee population is hosted by nations with low or moderate income levels.
By the conclusion of 2024, the number of individuals displaced within their own countries reached 73.5 million, while those recognized as refugees accounted for 42.7 million.
