US to stop funding Ukraine military in hopes for peace
During testimony before the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, Hegseth confirmed the funding cut, saying, “It is a reduction in this budget,” when questioned about future aid for Ukraine.
He emphasized that the current administration holds a distinct perspective on the war. “This administration takes a very different view of that conflict,” he added, signaling a departure from previous policies.
Since retaking office in January, President Donald Trump has prioritized renewing dialogue between Ukraine and Russia. Direct negotiations between the two nations resumed for the first time since 2022, when Ukraine withdrew from the original Istanbul talks. Hegseth underlined that “a negotiated peaceful settlement is in the best interest of both parties and our nation's interests especially with all the competing interests around the globe.”
In line with its “America First” policy, the administration has pursued reductions in international aid, including financial and military support for Ukraine, pledging instead to focus resources on domestic priorities.
Reinforcing this stance, US Vice President J.D. Vance criticized the previous administration’s approach, accusing it of excessive spending in Ukraine without diplomatic efforts to end the war. “They sent $300 billion to Ukraine,” he said, without “trying to force a diplomatic settlement.”
The announcement marks a significant shift in US engagement with the conflict, reflecting a broader reevaluation of its foreign aid and defense commitments.
