Russia, UN representatives talk about strategies to end Sudan war

(MENAFN) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin met with Ramtane Lamamra, the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy for Sudan, to discuss ways to end the ongoing armed conflict in Sudan, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced Monday.

Both officials stressed the urgent need to halt the prolonged fighting that has plagued Sudan since April 2023. The conflict pits the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), as both factions compete for control amid a stalled transition to civilian governance.

The Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of coordinated international efforts to secure a ceasefire and restart inclusive dialogue among all key political groups and ethnic communities in Sudan.

Special focus was given to the worsening humanitarian crisis on the ground. The statement also reaffirmed opposition to any destructive external interference in Sudan’s affairs.

Since the conflict began, over 4 million people have fled Sudan, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). UNHCR spokesperson Eugene Byun described the situation as reaching a “tragic milestone,” warning that continued violence could displace thousands more and threaten regional and global stability.

Dossou Patrice Ahouansou from UNHCR highlighted the dire conditions in neighboring Chad, where over 800,000 Sudanese refugees have sought safety. He described the situation as “appalling” due to severe underfunding, with only 14% of needed resources secured.

Estimates of deaths vary, but research from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine indicates that more than 61,000 people were killed in Khartoum during the first 14 months of fighting.

Earlier this month, the UN renewed its call for all parties in Sudan to respect international humanitarian law.
