US General Considers Pakistan as Counterterrorism Ally

(MENAFN) General Michael Kurilla, the head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), has praised Pakistan as a “phenomenal partner” in the ongoing fight against terrorism.

Speaking before the US House Armed Services Committee, Kurilla acknowledged Pakistan’s significant contribution to combating extremist threats, particularly highlighting recent joint efforts in targeting ISIS-Khorasan operatives.

According to Kurilla, Pakistan’s armed forces have apprehended at least five ISIS-Khorasan militants based on minimal intelligence shared by the United States.

“Since the beginning of 2024, Pakistan had over 1,000 terrorist attacks in the western area, killing about 700 security personnel and civilians, and 2,500 were wounded – they are in an active counter-terrorism fight right now and they have been a phenomenal partner in the counter-terrorism world,” he emphasized.

These remarks underscore the severity of the challenges Pakistan faces and its ongoing commitment to combating terrorism alongside international partners.

Kurilla also highlighted a key collaboration in March 2025, when Pakistani authorities assisted the US in detaining Mohammed Sharifullah, who is accused of playing a role in the 2021 Kabul airport bombing.

Following this significant arrest, Pakistan’s Army chief, General Asim Munir, personally contacted Kurilla and requested that he relay the development to United States Leader Donald Trump, demonstrating the depth of communication and cooperation between the two countries in security matters.
