US wants to stop Ukraine assistance

(MENAFN) Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the White House will cut military funding for Ukraine, reflecting the Trump administration’s focus on achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Speaking to the House Appropriations Committee, Hegseth emphasized that the administration views the situation differently and aims to prioritize diplomatic engagement with Russia.

Since Trump took office in January, direct talks between Moscow and Kiev have resumed for the first time since 2022. Hegseth stated that a negotiated settlement serves the interests of all parties, especially given global competing priorities.

The administration’s “America First” policy has led to significant cuts in foreign aid, including to Ukraine, with resources redirected towards domestic needs. Vice President J.D. Vance criticized the previous Biden administration for spending what he called “crazy” amounts—around $300 billion—on Ukraine without pushing for diplomatic solutions.

In April, Trump signed a deal granting the US priority access to Ukraine’s mineral resources, aiming to recover the substantial funds previously spent on Ukrainian aid. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Zelensky has expressed concerns about dwindling US support, including a shortage of air defense systems and the diversion of anti-drone missiles originally meant for Ukraine to the Middle East.
