German foreign intelligence director says Russia possibly to strike NATO

(MENAFN) The chief of Germany’s foreign intelligence agency (BND), Bruno Kahl, has warned that Russia might attack NATO countries once the Ukraine conflict ends, using this claim to justify Germany’s significant military spending increase. Kahl stated that intelligence indicates Ukraine is just a stepping stone in Russia’s broader ambitions toward the West.

He expressed concerns that some in Moscow doubt NATO’s commitment under Article 5, believing the US might hesitate to defend its allies in the Baltics. Kahl suggested Russia could deploy “little green men” — covert forces similar to those used in Crimea in 2014 — to Estonia under the pretext of protecting Russian-speaking minorities.

Kahl also argued that Russia aims to push NATO back to its late 1990s position and expel the US from Europe. While Moscow considers NATO’s eastward expansion a key cause of the Ukraine war, President Vladimir Putin insists Russia will not attack NATO unless provoked.

Russia has further warned that Western military aid to Ukraine effectively makes NATO a direct party in the conflict. Germany, under Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has increased its support for Ukraine, including plans to provide long-range missiles, prompting Russia to accuse Berlin of sabotaging peace efforts.
