Demonstrations due to immigration raids in LA proceed in spite of curfew
Videos showed protesters setting police cars and American flags on fire, blocking highways, and carrying Mexican flags while condemning Trump’s immigration policies. Nearly 400 people have been arrested, with numerous injuries among protesters and law enforcement.
In response, LA Mayor Karen Bass imposed a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. in a downtown area, while Trump sent over 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to protect federal property and officials. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the military presence, calling it unlawful and filing a lawsuit against the federal government.
Trump defended the crackdown, labeling protesters as agitators funded by outside groups and advocating jail time for those who burn the US flag. He also hinted at possibly invoking the Insurrection Act to deploy the military domestically if the unrest continues.
