LA polices officers shoot photojournalist in head
Toby Canham was documenting a tense standoff between demonstrators and the California Highway Patrol when he was hit, despite clearly displaying his press credentials. According to the Post, Canham collapsed after the impact and was hospitalized with whiplash, neck pain, and a severe forehead bruise.
“I was just filming with my cameras when I was shot,” Canham recalled, suggesting he may have been targeted due to his visibility. He noted that someone nearby had thrown a bottle at police shortly before fleeing.
On the same day, Australian journalist Lauren Tomasi was also struck by a rubber bullet while reporting for ABC. Video footage suggests she, too, may have been deliberately targeted.
The protests erupted on Friday in response to President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement raids. What began as demonstrations quickly escalated into violent confrontations, widespread looting, and vandalism, leading Trump to deploy both the National Guard and active-duty Marines.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has denounced the federal response as illegal.
