Trump supports possible detention of California governor

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has voiced support for a proposal by White House border enforcement chief Tom Homan to arrest California Governor Gavin Newsom over alleged obstruction of federal immigration efforts.

Homan, who oversees enforcement and removal operations, previously stated that Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass could face federal charges for interfering with immigration agents. The comments follow Trump’s recent deployment of National Guard troops and active-duty Marines to control riots in Los Angeles, which erupted after over 40 undocumented workers were detained.

“I’d do it if I were Tom. I think it’s great,” Trump said when asked if he endorsed the potential arrests. “I like Gavin Newsom personally, but he’s done a terrible job — he’s grossly incompetent.”

The unrest, now in its fourth day in Los Angeles, began after immigration officials conducted raids at a Home Depot parking lot and a clothing factory. Demonstrations soon turned violent and spread to cities including San Francisco, New York, Atlanta, and Seattle.

Homan told NBC News that sheltering undocumented immigrants or obstructing law enforcement is a felony, although he acknowledged neither Newsom nor Bass has yet "crossed the line."

Newsom responded defiantly in an MSNBC interview, saying, “Arrest me. Let’s go. That kind of bloviating is exhausting.” He criticized the deployment of federal troops without state approval, calling it a violation of California’s sovereignty.

On Monday, Newsom filed a federal lawsuit in San Francisco against Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the Pentagon, seeking to block the National Guard deployment. In a post on X, he accused the president of "illegally" federalizing the Guard and inflaming the situation.
