Over ten murdered in school shooting in Austria

(MENAFN) At least eleven people have died in a mass shooting at a high school in Graz, Austria, marking the deadliest school shooting in the country’s modern history. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. local time on June 10 at BORG Dreierschutzengasse, a secondary school in the Lend district.

Authorities confirmed the shooter, a 21-year-old Austrian citizen from the Graz-Umgebung area, opened fire inside the school using two legally owned firearms. He later turned the gun on himself in a restroom. The fatalities include one adult and nine students, with the attacker among the dead. A 16-year-old student later revealed to local outlet AUF1 that the death toll had risen to eleven.

Over 30 others, including teachers and students, were injured, with at least two in critical condition. Police responded swiftly with special forces, helicopters, and emergency services, and successfully evacuated the school. They have ruled out any ongoing threat, and the building has been secured.

While the motive remains unclear, early reports suggest the gunman, a former student, may have been bullied. The State Criminal Police Office has launched an investigation into the attack.

The shooting took place during the country’s Matura exams, Austria’s version of final high school exams. In response, the government has announced three days of national mourning. Flags have been lowered to half-mast outside Vienna’s Hofburg Palace.

Leaders across Austria and Europe expressed grief and solidarity. Graz Mayor Elke Kahr called the event a “terrible tragedy,” while Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig emphasized the importance of unity in the face of violence. Chancellor Christian Stocker described it as a “dark day” and a “national tragedy that shakes us deeply.”
