California Governor says Trump “want a spectacle”

(MENAFN) California Governor Gavin Newsom has openly opposed President Donald Trump’s decision to send National Guard troops to Los Angeles, describing the move as deliberately provocative and cautioning that it could escalate tensions rather than calm them.

The federal government’s decision to take control of California’s National Guard and deploy 2,000 troops to the region came after two consecutive days of demonstrations that included confrontations with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. Officials in Washington justified the deployment by citing what they called the state’s failure to maintain public order during recent immigration enforcement actions.

Newsom, however, pushed back forcefully, asserting that there was no actual shortage of law enforcement in the area. “The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles – not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle,” he stated. “Don’t give them one.”

The governor also used social media to encourage residents to express their views peacefully, while strongly discouraging any acts of violence. “Speak out peacefully,” he urged in a post on X.

Tensions flared on Saturday during anti-ICE demonstrations in the city of Paramount, where a crowd gathered near a Home Depot amid rumors of a planned immigration raid. Although ICE later stated that no operation was carried out at that location, federal agents, Border Patrol officers, and local law enforcement were met with hostility and used tear gas and so-called “less-lethal rounds” to disperse the crowd.

Similar unrest occurred the previous day during a series of ICE raids across Los Angeles that led to 44 administrative arrests. These events have sparked widespread concern and criticism from both local leaders and civil rights advocates, who fear the federal intervention could further inflame tensions in a state already at odds with Washington’s immigration policies.
