Russian Court Sentences Exiled Navalny Ally
(MENAFN) A Russian tribunal has handed down an 18-year prison sentence in absentia to Leonid Volkov, a prominent associate of the late opposition leader Alexey Navalny.
The court found Volkov guilty of forming an extremist organization, glorifying Nazism, and financing radical activities.
Volkov began working with Navalny’s team in 2013 and relocated to the European Union in 2019.
He has remained in exile since then, currently residing in Lithuania.
In 2021, Russian authorities issued an international arrest warrant for Volkov, accusing him of unlawfully persuading minors to take part in unauthorized demonstrations.
In its ruling, the court imposed an additional penalty of 2 million rubles (equivalent to USD25,000) and prohibited Volkov from managing any websites for a period of six years.
The indictment also cited two instances of “politically-motivated vandalism” and the dissemination of false information concerning the Russian military.
Responding to the verdict on X, Volkov ridiculed the outcome.
He acknowledged that while the prison term was “harsh,” the monetary penalty was trivial.
He remarked that he was “not even barred from using the internet,” and pledged to continue using it effectively.
Volkov assumed leadership of Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) in July 2021, shortly after the Russian government classified the organization as extremist.
