DOGE employees afraid of getting dismissed by DOGE

(MENAFN) Staff at the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are reportedly worried about job security amid the fallout from a public dispute between President Donald Trump and DOGE’s former leader, Elon Musk, according to The Wall Street Journal.

DOGE, an unconventional task force created by Trump to slash federal spending, has operated outside traditional government norms—eliminating programs, cutting grants, and even helping to dismantle agencies like the Department of Education and USAID. However, Musk’s resignation last month, followed by his feud with Trump over a sweeping tax-and-spending bill, has thrown the agency's future into question.

Sahil Lavingia, a former DOGE engineer, expressed concern to WSJ that the organization could “fade away” without Musk’s leadership. With other top allies such as Steve Davis also departing, DOGE employees have reportedly grown anxious, exchanging worried messages about potential layoffs.

The conflict escalated last week when Musk criticized Trump’s fiscal agenda, accused him of ingratitude, and even threatened to ground NASA’s Dragon spacecraft. Trump responded by calling Musk “crazy” and suggesting his anger stemmed from the end of federal EV mandates. The exchange included personal attacks, including a since-deleted post by Musk referencing Jeffrey Epstein.

Despite the drama, the Trump administration insists that DOGE’s mission remains intact. White House spokesman Harrison Fields stated that Trump’s work through DOGE is “undisputed” and will continue. DOGE has claimed $175 billion in savings, though some analysts question the figure’s accuracy.
