Trump says Russia, Ukraine are “two children fighting in a park”
Although under mounting pressure from European allies to take a harder stance on Moscow, Trump has held off on introducing new sanctions, stating that he would take action “when the time felt right.” He emphasized that such measures could disrupt ongoing negotiations between the two nations and possibly derail efforts toward peace.
In a meeting held Thursday at the White House with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump made it clear that a decision would be forthcoming if diplomatic solutions proved unattainable. “It’s in my brain, the deadline,” he remarked, suggesting he already had a personal timeline in mind for when action might be necessary.
He went on to note that punitive measures could target both nations involved, stating that “we’ll be very, very, very tough, and it could be on both countries to be honest.”
“You know, it takes two to tango,” the US president added.
Trump compared the conflict to “two children fighting in a park,” implying that both sides bore responsibility for the continued hostilities. He also referred to a sanctions bill making its way through the US Senate, saying it would be “guided by me,” though he appeared to lean toward allowing the war to persist a bit longer before stepping in, saying it might be better to let Russia and Ukraine continue fighting “for a while” before “pulling them apart.”
The legislation in question is supported by a Republican senator known for his firm stance against Russia. The bill proposes extreme tariffs—up to 500%—on nations that continue purchasing Russian energy resources, including uranium and other key materials. These sanctions would primarily impact countries like India and China, which have maintained economic ties with Moscow.
This warning from Trump comes amid a surge in Ukrainian offensives targeting Russian infrastructure. Recent operations included a drone attack on several Russian airbases and sabotage of railway lines in the Bryansk and Kursk regions—actions that reportedly resulted in seven fatalities and dozens of injuries.
