Trump justifies Putin attack on Ukraine

(MENAFN) US Leader Donald Trump has criticized recent Ukrainian military operations, stating that Kiev’s attacks on key Russian assets have significantly heightened tensions and handed Moscow a clear reason to retaliate with force.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump responded to questions about whether Ukraine’s drone assault on Russia’s long-range nuclear-capable bombers had shifted his stance on the stakes of the ongoing conflict and what leverage Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky might still possess.

“Well, they gave Putin a reason to go in and bomb the hell out of them last night,” Trump stated. “That’s something I didn’t like about it. When I saw it, I said: ‘Here we go… now it’s going to be a strike.’”

The latest escalation follows a series of coordinated Ukrainian drone attacks targeting multiple Russian airbases, as well as the sabotage of several railway bridges in Russian territory. These operations disrupted both passenger and cargo trains, resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals and injuring over 120 others, including children.

In the aftermath of these incidents, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Trump via phone on Wednesday. During the call, Putin reportedly defended Russia’s right to respond, labeling Ukraine’s actions as provocation that warranted retaliation.

In response to what was described as a series of “terrorist acts” by Kiev, Russia launched a comprehensive retaliatory strike early Friday. According to its Defense Ministry, the assault utilized missiles launched from the air, sea, and ground, as well as unmanned aerial systems.
