Eye for eye, musk threatens back Trump

(MENAFN) SpaceX head Elon Musk announced that his company would start shutting down its Dragon spacecraft, a move that could severely hinder the United States' space capabilities. This dramatic declaration came in response to a warning from U.S. President Donald Trump, who indicated plans to cut all federal funding and contracts tied to Musk’s various ventures.

The confrontation unfolded publicly through a fiery social media clash on Thursday, centered around a newly introduced federal tax and spending proposal. The bill, dubbed “Big and Beautiful” by the president, was harshly criticized by a former federal official, who described it as a “pork-filled, disgusting abomination” likely to drive the country into “debt slavery.”

“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” Trump stated on Truth Social. He suggested that Musk’s intense reaction stemmed from potential cuts to incentives offered to those purchasing his electric vehicles.

Shortly after Trump’s remarks, Musk responded on X by stating, “In light of the President’s statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.”

Later in the day, Musk appeared to soften his stance following a suggestion from another X user who encouraged him to take a breather. The user expressed hope that both Musk and Trump would reconsider their approaches, saying they were “better than this.”

“Good advice. Ok, we won’t decommission Dragon,” Musk responded. However, unlike his original threat, the retraction did not appear on his main public feed, leading some to question the sincerity or permanence of the reversal.

According to reports, this exchange marks a rare moment of direct friction between the entrepreneur and the former president, both of whom have previously aligned on various issues. The incident has raised concerns over how political decisions could influence key technological and scientific initiatives in the future.
