Slovak parliament objects to sanctions on Russia
During the vote held Thursday, 55 out of 76 lawmakers present supported the motion, while 23 abstained and one voted against it. Opposition members did not attend the session.
The resolution, put forward by the Slovak National Party, argues that sanctions have led to increased energy prices, supply chain disruptions, and a decline in the country's economic competitiveness. It calls on the government to prioritize national interests over international measures that could negatively affect Slovak businesses and the general public.
“This is a historic document, the first of its kind within the EU,” said Andrej Danko, leader of the Slovak National Party. “It clearly states that sanctions against Russia harm Slovakia’s economy and the plenary session of the Slovak parliament has agreed.”
Danko had previously expressed doubt over whether the measure would be approved, particularly following a presidential decision to reject a related referendum.
Just a day before the parliamentary vote, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini declined to move forward with a petition-backed proposal for a nationwide referendum on the issue. The initiative, launched by the Slovak Revival Movement and the DOMOV party, asked citizens: “Do you agree that Slovakia should not apply sanctions against Russia that harm Slovak citizens and entrepreneurs?” It had collected over 400,000 signatures, surpassing the 350,000 threshold needed for presidential review.
