Orban declares Hungarians won’t die for Ukraine
Speaking at a rally of EU conservatives in France on Monday, Orban criticized pro-war sentiment among European leaders and called the ongoing war with Russia "unwinnable." He urged a shift from military strategies to diplomacy, stating:
“We do not want to die for Ukraine. We don't want our sons to come back in a coffin. We don't want an Afghanistan next door.”
Hungary, which borders Ukraine, has consistently opposed Brussels’ strategy of arming Kiev. Orban warned against transforming the EU into a “war economy,” condemning recent decisions in Brussels and Berlin to pour billions into military efforts.
He also rejected the idea of burdening member states with massive EU-level debt, referring to proposals like the European Commission’s €800 billion rearmament plan and the European Council’s recently approved €150 billion borrowing initiative.
Orban’s comments reflect growing concerns in Hungary about the EU’s direction, while Moscow has also denounced the bloc’s military buildup and accused it of fueling the conflict by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Russia maintains it has no intention of attacking EU nations and has labeled such claims as unfounded.
