Secretary General says NATO can be strong alliance
“NATO is the most powerful defense alliance in world history. It’s even more powerful than the Roman Empire, and more powerful than Napoleon’s empire,” Rutte stated. He emphasized that despite NATO’s strength, continued investment and upkeep are essential to ensure its effectiveness.
Rutte called on member nations to increase defense budgets and strengthen military readiness, urging them to enhance the alliance’s capability to respond to any future threats, particularly from Russia—a country that has consistently dismissed accusations of aggression and condemned such narratives as fabricated.
“We must make NATO a stronger, fairer and more lethal alliance… We need more resources, forces, and capabilities so that we are prepared to face any threat,” Rutte added. He warned that NATO could be vulnerable if member states continue adhering only to the longstanding guideline of spending 2% of their GDP on defense.
Rutte also revealed plans to introduce a new “defense investment plan” during the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, aiming to encourage allies to commit more robustly to military funding.
