Trump, Musk fight: suggestion of forming new political party

(MENAFN) Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, stated on Thursday that former President Donald Trump would not have won the 2024 election without his support. He also hinted at the possibility that the country may be ready to embrace a new political party, as reported by various sources.

“Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” Musk posted on his X account, adding “such ingratitude.”

Additionally, Musk shared a poll with his 220 million-plus followers asking whether the United States should consider forming a new political party with roughly a day left before the poll closes, more than 84% of respondents have indicated support for the idea.

These remarks and Musk’s polling efforts add another chapter to the intensifying conflict between the former allies, following Musk’s exit from his White House role overseeing government streamlining.

Earlier that same day, Trump expressed his frustration with Musk, amid the tech mogul’s ongoing opposition to the administration’s key tax and spending bill. The president also suggested that Musk’s criticism of the legislation—dubbed by Trump as the “big, beautiful bill”—might stem from feelings of exclusion. “I think he misses the place. I think he got out there and all of a sudden he wasn't in this beautiful Oval Office,” Trump said.

Trump continued, “I'm very disappointed, because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here, better than you people. He knew everything about it. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden, he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we're going to have to cut the EV mandate,” the president stated while meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The “EV mandate” refers to a longstanding one-time tax credit worth up to $7,500 for buyers of electric vehicles.

Amid the feud, Tesla’s stock took a significant hit on Thursday afternoon, tumbling 10% in value as tensions rose.

In a swift response, Musk posted “whatever” on X, pushing back against Trump’s claim that he had reviewed the bill before leaving his White House position, calling that statement “false.” Musk did admit that the elimination of the electric vehicle tax credit was part of his opposition.

“This bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!” Musk wrote.
