Russia Urges Ukraine to Accept Moscow’s Peace Terms
He cautioned that refusing to compromise would only result in further territorial losses for Ukraine.
“We want peace. But if Ukraine keeps being driven by the national interests of others, then we will be simply forced to respond,” Vladimir Medinsky stated in an interview with a news agency.
Speaking after the most recent negotiations held in Istanbul, Medinsky referenced the Great Northern War from 1700 to 1721 as an example of Moscow’s success in drawn-out conflicts.
He asserted, “With Russia, it’s impossible to fight a long war.”
The aide likened the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began in 2022, to a dispute between siblings.
“This is like a conflict between two brothers—one older and one younger—about who is smarter and more important,” he explained.
“This conflict sadly deepens our differences, and that’s why we want it to end as soon as possible.”
Medinsky headed Russia’s delegation during the two most recent rounds of peace talks in Istanbul on May 16 and June 2.
During the second round, Russia and Ukraine exchanged documents that laid out their differing proposals for a potential peace agreement.
According to Russian media reports, Russia’s memorandum includes demands such as international acknowledgment of Ukrainian territories currently under Russian control, prohibition of arms shipments to Ukraine, cessation of military mobilization, conducting elections, establishing Ukraine as neutral and non-aligned, and safeguarding the full rights, freedoms, and interests of Russian-speaking populations.
