MEP claims Brussels absorbed by anti-Russian ‘war hysteria’

(MENAFN)
Fernand Kartheiser, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Luxembourg, has accused the EU’s political establishment of being consumed by “war hysteria” toward Russia. Speaking to RT, Kartheiser said his recent expulsion from the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group reflects the growing hostility in Brussels toward any engagement with Moscow.

Kartheiser was removed from the ECR on Wednesday after visiting Russia last month, a move his former colleagues deemed a serious breach of party lines. He stated the purpose of his trip was to reopen dialogue with Russia amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions. Though he anticipated backlash from the ECR—especially from its Baltic and Nordic factions, known for their hardline anti-Russian positions—he said the severity of the response still highlights the irrational climate in EU politics.

“There’s a general atmosphere in the European Parliament that borders on war hysteria,” Kartheiser remarked. “Our responses are often not grounded in rationality.”

In contrast, he claimed ordinary Europeans have shown strong support for his actions. “People on the street stop me, shake my hand, and thank me. It’s astonishing,” he noted, suggesting a clear divide between EU leadership and public sentiment.

Kartheiser argued that while Brussels maintains an aggressively anti-Russian stance, the broader EU population favors diplomacy and wants differences resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation.

The EU has maintained tough sanctions and military support for Ukraine since the conflict with Russia escalated in 2022. Kartheiser and other critics argue that this approach risks undermining efforts—like those from US President Donald Trump—to broker peace.

Moscow has accused EU leaders of sabotaging peace negotiations and escalating tensions through increased defense spending, effectively labeling the EU as the “war party” in Europe.
