Indonesian Official Warns of Over Using AI

(MENAFN) Indonesia’s Higher Education, Science, and Technology Deputy Minister, Stella Christie, cautioned that deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) without human supervision could jeopardize inclusive economic progress.

She emphasized that while AI holds great promise, its unchecked use might threaten the very growth it aims to support.

“To fully leverage the AI era, we must prioritize the ability to assess AI-generated results,” Stella highlighted, further noting that the true potential “lies not in matching what AI can do, but in building the human capacity to verify and improve upon it,” as reported by a state news agency.

Speaking at a symposium on the integration of human resources and the digital sector held in Jakarta, Stella explained how this groundbreaking technology has already influenced the labor market.

It has broadened access to opportunities previously restricted to specialists.

However, she warned that relying on AI without careful human oversight could negatively affect economic conditions.

The deputy minister also shared a recent experience where AI provided inaccurate information. When her team used AI to predict the nation’s chances in the World Cup qualifiers, the AI “lied” by merely offering rough probabilities rather than fully calculating all possible outcomes.

She pointed out that “it turned out that the AI only provided estimates. It didn’t actually compute all the possibilities.”

Stella stressed that having technical coding skills alone is insufficient. If AI outputs go unquestioned and unexamined, there is a danger of making decisions based on flawed assumptions.

These mistakes can lead to “real consequences, economically and in terms of employment,” underscoring the essential need for human critical thinking alongside AI advancements.
