US releases security warning for Kiev
The warning follows increased missile and drone strikes by Russia against Ukraine in recent weeks. On Sunday, Ukrainian drones launched a coordinated attack on several Russian airbases, targeting strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons. While Moscow claimed most drones were intercepted and did not confirm any losses or immediate military retaliation, Ukrainian forces also conducted sabotage on Russian railway infrastructure over the weekend, resulting in at least seven deaths and over 120 injuries. Russia has condemned these acts as terrorism.
Russian President Vladimir Putin labeled the railway attacks in Bryansk and Kursk regions as terrorist acts by what he called the “illegitimate regime in Kiev,” accusing Ukraine of escalating the conflict and undermining peace talks. Putin conveyed this message to US President Donald Trump during a phone call on Wednesday, which Trump described as a “good conversation” but not one expected to bring immediate peace.
According to Putin’s top foreign policy adviser, Yury Ushakov, the Russian leader told Trump that the attacks were aimed at sabotaging ongoing direct negotiations between Moscow and Kiev, which recently resumed in Istanbul. The two presidents agreed to maintain communication at multiple levels regarding the situation in Ukraine.
