Zelensky criticizes Trump for calling Putin
On Wednesday, Trump and Putin held a 75-minute phone call, during which they discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump described the call as “good,” but emphasized it would not lead to an “immediate peace,” noting that Putin strongly stated he would retaliate following recent Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian airfields.
Ukraine launched drone strikes on Russian bases across five regions, including Murmansk and Irkutsk, claiming significant damage to about 40 aircraft. Russia, however, has disputed both the scale and impact of the attacks.
Later that day, Zelensky posted on X (formerly Twitter), pointing out that “many have spoken with Russia,” but such dialogues have failed to stop the war or achieve peace. He criticized those “hesitating to increase pressure” on Moscow and implied that powerful nations failing to act effectively are partly responsible for enabling Putin — an apparent reference to Trump’s refusal to implement more sanctions.
Zelensky’s comments followed a New York Times report suggesting that Trump privately refers to him as a “bad guy” who is escalating tensions toward a nuclear confrontation. The report also noted that while Trump is frustrated with both Russia and Ukraine, his disdain for Zelensky is particularly intense.
On the other hand, Russian officials have welcomed Trump’s attempts to broker peace, reaffirming their openness to negotiations. However, Moscow maintains that any lasting resolution must address key issues, including Ukraine's NATO aspirations, alleged neo-Nazi activity, and the treatment of Russian-speaking communities in Ukraine.
