Macron Confirms Global Commons Are Not for Sale
(MENAFN) French Leader Emmanuel Macron, on Monday, firmly opposed the idea of any sale or appropriation of global commons, asserting that territories like Greenland, Antarctica, and the high seas "are not for sale."
His statements were made during his address at the opening of the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, a city located in southern France. Macron's comments appeared to be a direct response to the frequent proposals by United States Leader Donald Trump regarding the purchase of Greenland.
Macron emphasized that the "abyss" of the ocean is not for sale, and similarly, neither Greenland nor Antarctica is available for acquisition.
His remarks are timely as he prepares for a symbolic visit to Greenland later this week, a trip intended to demonstrate his support for the autonomous Danish territory.
Since taking office in January, US President Trump has made multiple public statements expressing his interest in acquiring Greenland, despite Denmark's persistent rejections.
Greenland, which has been part of Denmark since the 18th century, was granted home rule in 1979.
It is located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans and is known for its rich mineral resources and strategic importance.
Both Denmark and Greenland have made it clear that they have no interest in selling the territory.
A recent survey conducted in January revealed that a significant 85 percent of Greenlanders are opposed to the idea of joining the United States.
In March, Greenland's Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen called on European nations to stand by Greenland to emphasize that it "is not and will never be for sale," reaffirming that the territory is governed by its people and this will remain unchanged.
