Japan seeks common ground with US on tariffs
(MENAFN) Japan’s top negotiator, Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa, acknowledged that Tokyo and Washington have “yet to find common ground” on tariffs following discussions with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
“Further progress” was made on the tariff issue, Akazawa told reporters after his meetings in Washington, DC, on Friday.
Currently engaged in the fifth round of tariff talks, Akazawa noted that both sides plan to “continue coordinating energetically to achieve an agreement that benefits both Japan and the United States.”
He reiterated Japan’s consistent position that the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration must be lifted without delay, citing the considerable impact on the Japanese economy.
Since April, Japan has submitted multiple proposals to the US, including initiatives to boost supply chains for semiconductors and critical minerals, as well as steps to streamline regulations for foreign-made vehicles.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and US President Donald Trump are also expected to meet during the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada, scheduled to run for three days starting June 15.
