UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon Face Assault

(MENAFN) The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, strongly denounced an assault against its team while conducting a routine patrol in the southern part of the country.

According to the mission’s statement, peacekeepers encountered a group of individuals who attempted to interfere with their operations near the area of Hallusiyat al-Tahta.

UNIFIL reported that, “In response, UNIFIL personnel employed non-lethal measures to ensure the safety of both the patrol members and those present.”

Fortunately, the incident did not result in any physical harm to the personnel involved.

Following the encounter, the mission urged the Lebanese government to implement all essential actions to guarantee that UN peacekeepers are able to perform their assignments without interference or intimidation.

“It is unacceptable that UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to be targeted,” the organization emphasized.

The statement reiterated the importance of “freedom of movement” as a fundamental element for fulfilling UNIFIL’s responsibilities.

This includes the ability to function “independently and impartially,” in accordance with the terms laid out in UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

In response to the incident, Lebanon’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the aggression and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.

Premier Nawaf Salam expressed similar outrage, reaffirming the nation’s dedication to carrying out UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which had brought an end to the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
