The phone serves as his primary connection to friends, family, politicians, business leaders, celebrities, world leaders, and journalists. Trump is known to often take calls from unknown numbers, seeing them as chances for spontaneous chats.
Sources say Trump enjoys calling people and receiving calls, with well over 100 contacts reportedly having his personal number. He uses several devices, including at least one dedicated to social media. Trump frequently leaves long voicemails and asks if recipients have shared his messages with others.
He reportedly distrusts White House landlines, suspecting them to be monitored by the so-called “deep state.” A former adviser noted Trump’s belief that he couldn’t trust White House staff, so he preferred using his personal phone.
Security officials have long cautioned Trump about the vulnerability of personal phones to hacking and wiretapping. In late 2024, the FBI revealed that Chinese hackers had penetrated US telecom networks, possibly eavesdropping on calls involving Trump and other officials. However, Trump dismissed these warnings, claiming his phone was “the best on the market.” Advisers eventually stopped trying to limit his phone use, though some security upgrades were reportedly added to his devices.
The White House declined to confirm these details, stating they do not disclose presidential security measures. Communications Director Steven Cheung defended Trump’s personal phone usage, calling him “the most transparent and accessible President in American history,” despite recent tensions with The Atlantic over leaked internal discussions.
