Trump Administration Plans Migrant Transfers

(MENAFN) The Trump administration is preparing to transfer as many as 9,000 undocumented immigrants to the U.S. detention center located in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, possibly beginning this week, according to reports from media outlets.

Government representatives shared with the media that the foreign nationals identified for potential relocation to the facility include individuals from a wide range of countries, such as Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Haiti, Ireland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Türkiye, and Ukraine.

Since February, around 500 migrants have already been detained at Guantanamo. However, individuals familiar with the situation stated that the center is now being readied to conduct health evaluations for up to 9,000 people to determine their fitness for transfer to the site.

The facility at Guantanamo Bay gained notoriety following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, as it became a location where many individuals suspected of terrorism were detained by U.S. military forces.

In January, Leader Donald Trump revealed his intention to utilize the Guantanamo Bay detention site for holding undocumented migrants.

These relocations could begin as early as Wednesday, with the expectation that those detained would be held at the facility temporarily before being returned to their home countries.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the president to intensify enforcement against unauthorized immigration. It includes expanded operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aimed at increasing detentions and deportations.

"Under President Trump's leadership, we are looking to set a goal of a minimum of 3,000 arrests for ICE every day," White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller informed a news agency last month, noting that the administration aims to raise that number further.
