Portugal Wins UEFA Nations League Title

(MENAFN) Portugal secured their second UEFA Nations League championship on Sunday, defeating Spain 5-3 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in both regular and extra time.

The match kicked off with Spain taking the lead in the 21st minute.

Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi broke the deadlock, scoring with a shot from within the penalty area at Munich's Allianz Arena.

However, just five minutes later, Portugal responded when defender Nuno Mendes found the back of the net with a precise shot from the ground, leveling the score at 1-1.

As the first half came to a close, Spain regained the advantage with a goal by midfielder Mikel Oyarzabal in the 45th minute, giving them a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Portugal came out strong in the second half, and in the 61st minute, their captain and seasoned star, Cristiano Ronaldo, capitalized on a loose ball in the penalty box to score, bringing the match to another 2-2 tie.

Ronaldo, who had fallen to the ground in the process of scoring, was substituted in the 88th minute for Goncalo Ramos.

With no further goals in extra time, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout.

In the decisive moment, Portugal clinched their historic second Nations League title when Spanish forward Alvaro Morata missed his penalty, handing the victory to Portugal.
